A new puppy, an older dog, a new cat, an older cat. Different animals, one idea: most of what looks like bad behavior is a need nobody noticed yet.
Mascotas
Don't invite anyone over. Not the neighbors, not the cousins. Your puppy has just lost their entire family and everything familiar in one afternoon. A parade of strangers is not a welcome, it is more of the same shock.
One room, not the whole house. A whole house is not freedom to a puppy — it is too much territory to keep track of, and it makes house-training far harder.
Start the schedule on day one. Out, eat, play, sleep, in the same order at the same times. Predictability is what switches the panic off.
The crate is a good place, never a punishment. Feed meals in it. Drop treats in it. Leave the door open at first so going in is always their idea.
Night one will be bad. It is supposed to be bad. It is not a sign you have made a mistake, and it does not last.
Stop waiting for a signal — puppies do not reliably give one. The rough rule is that a puppy can hold it about one hour per month of age, plus one. Three months old, roughly four hours.
So you go out on a timer, not on a hunch: after waking, after eating, after playing, and every couple of hours regardless. An accident indoors is a scheduling error, and the schedule is yours. Scolding only teaches them to go somewhere you cannot see.
Sit is a trick. Settle is a state — lying down, relaxed, staying relaxed while life carries on around them.
You cannot command it, you catch it. Any moment your puppy settles on their own, mark it: quiet praise, a treat delivered low and calmly, no excitement. Rewarding calm feels like doing nothing, which is exactly why most of us skip it — and why most of us accidentally train a dog to be excited, because excitement is when we hand out attention.
There is a window, roughly 3 to 16 weeks, when a puppy's brain files new things as "normal". After it closes, new things get filed as "suspicious", and unfiling them is real work.
Socialising is not "meet every dog". It is umbrellas, wheelchairs, beards, hats, stairs, the vacuum, men in hi-vis, children running, car rides, the vet's waiting room. Short, calm, positive, with the option to retreat. One frightening experience teaches more than ten pleasant ones.
Ask your vet what is safe before vaccinations are complete. Carrying a puppy out to watch the world go past still counts, and it is often the better version anyway.
This page is general information, not veterinary advice. If you think your dog has eaten something, call your vet straight away.
No invites a nadie.

About the links. Some items below link to products I recommend. Where a link earns a commission it is marked #ad, and it costs you nothing extra. I only list things I would tell a friend to buy — and the honest advice is often to buy less, which is why half this page is about what to skip.
And the one that isn't a purchase: book the first vet appointment before the puppy arrives, and put your vet's number and the nearest 24-hour emergency vet in your phone the same day. It is the most useful thing on this page and it costs nothing.
Old dogs are not being stubborn. That is the single most useful thing on this page. The dog who stopped coming when called has usually gone deaf. The dog who growls when a child hugs him is usually in pain somewhere. The dog who has an accident in the house after ten perfect years has a medical problem, not an attitude problem.
Put down rugs and runners on any slick floor. An arthritic dog on tile or hardwood is doing the equivalent of walking on ice all day — and the fear of slipping stops them moving long before the arthritis does. Runners along the routes they actually use, from the bed to the door to the water bowl, change an old dog’s life more than most supplements will.
Keep the nails short. Long nails push the toes up and change how the foot lands, which makes the slipping worse. This is the maintenance job that gets forgotten exactly when it starts to matter.
Ramps and steps, not jumping. Off the couch, out of the car, onto the bed. The landing is what does the damage.
If your old dog is carrying extra weight, taking it off will do more for their joints than anything you can buy. It is not about looks — less weight through a painful joint is less pain, immediately and every single step. Ask your vet what your dog should weigh, because almost everyone underestimates it, and remember that treats are food.
The instinct is to let an old dog rest. Muscle is what holds a bad joint together, and it disappears fast. Shorter walks, more often, is the formula. And let them sniff — a slow walk where they smell everything tires an old dog out more happily than a brisk one where they are hurried along.
Twice-yearly vet visits instead of annual ones, once a dog is into their senior years. A year is a long time at that stage.
Stop rearranging the furniture. A blind dog maps a house they know and moves through it confidently until someone moves the ottoman. Keep the water bowl in exactly the same place. For a deaf dog, stamp on the floor rather than shouting — they feel it — and always wake them with a hand near the nose, never a hand on the body, so they do not wake up startled and snapping.
The kid job: the water bowl is theirs, checked twice a day, morning and night. Old dogs get dehydrated easily and it is the one job a child can do perfectly, forever, without being supervised.
Rampas y escalones, no saltos.
Almost everyone makes the same first mistake: they give the new cat the whole house. It comes from generosity and it backfires. A cat dropped into a whole unfamiliar house finds the highest, darkest hiding place and stays there for a week.
One room, with everything in it — litter box, food and water at opposite ends, a bed, and somewhere to hide that is not under the bed. A cardboard box on its side is perfect. The hiding place is not a failure; it is the base they come back to, and a cat with a base gets brave far faster than a cat without one.
Then open the door and let them decide. Confidence comes from choosing to come out, never from being carried out.
Sit on the floor and ignore them. Read something out loud if you feel silly. Do not reach, do not stare, do not scoop them up. If they look at you, blink slowly and look away. That is the cat signal for “I am no threat,” and it is the fastest thing that works.
Never use your hands as a toy. A kitten wrestling your fingers is charming for two months and a real problem for fifteen years.
Cats scratch to stretch and to leave a mark. You cannot train it away; you can only decide where it happens. Get a post that is taller than the cat standing up on their back legs and heavy enough not to wobble — the flimsy short ones are why people think posts do not work — and put it where the cat already scratches, or beside where they sleep. Cats stretch when they wake up. Meet them there. And please do not declaw; it is amputation, and it causes both pain and litter box problems.
The night zoomies are a hunting cycle with no ending. Hunt, catch, eat, groom, sleep — that is the sequence a cat is built for. So: a real wand-toy session before bed, ten or fifteen minutes, and let them actually catch the toy at the end instead of stopping while they are still keyed up. Then feed them. You have completed the cycle, and the cat sleeps because the sequence says so.
Vertical space does the rest. A cat with a high shelf or a tall tree has more territory without a bigger house, and cats measure a home in height as much as floor.
Two things that are genuinely dangerous: lilies are fatal to cats — the whole plant, including the pollen and the vase water, and it causes kidney failure. Keep them out of the house entirely. And never put dog flea treatment on a cat; several are toxic to cats and the mistake is often fatal. Check with your vet before anything goes on their skin.
The kid job: they are the boring one. Their job is to sit still on the floor and let the cat come to them — and the win is the cat choosing to approach. Turning “be gentle” into a game a child can actually win is what stops the chasing.
Cats hide illness. It is not stoicism, it is survival wiring — a visibly sick animal is a target. This has one practical consequence that matters enormously: with an older cat, a change in behavior is the symptom. By the time something is obvious, it has usually been going on a while.
It is the most common reason older cats are given up, and it is almost never behavioral. It is usually one of three things: a urinary or kidney problem, arthritis making the box painful to climb into, or a box that has become hard to reach. Get a box with a low entry — or cut a doorway into one side of a storage tub — and put one on every floor of the house. An old cat should never have to take stairs to reach a bathroom. And get the vet to rule out the medical side first, because it usually is the medical side.
They stop jumping. That is the whole tell, and it is why feline arthritis goes unnoticed for years in a majority of old cats. Watch for a cat who used to be on the counter and is not anymore, who now sleeps on the couch rather than the top of the bookshelf, or who hesitates and gathers themselves before a jump they used to make without thinking.
What helps: steps or a stool up to the favorite high place — they want the height, they just need a staircase now — soft bedding, warm spots, and food and water where no climbing is required. There are also good pain treatments for cats now. Ask; do not assume they must be slowing down.
Twice-yearly vet visits with bloodwork once a cat is over about ten. Bloodwork is the whole point — it sees the things the cat is hiding.
An older cat who stops grooming is telling you something. The usual reason they can no longer reach their lower back and the base of the tail is arthritis, and the mats that form there are painful. Mats near the tail base are a pain signal, not a grooming failure. Brush them there, gently, and get bad mats cut out by a vet or groomer rather than pulling at them.
Check the claws monthly too. Old cats scratch less, so the claws stop wearing down, and an overgrown claw can curl into the pad. It is painful, it is easy to miss, and it is easy to prevent.
Old cats do badly with change. Same furniture, same box in the same place, same feeding times. If an old cat starts yowling at night — especially in the small hours, in an empty room — that is worth a vet visit rather than a closed door: it is often high blood pressure, thyroid trouble, or feline cognitive dysfunction, and all three can be treated.
This section is general information, not veterinary advice. With cats especially, “wait and see” is the expensive choice — call your vet.
